When We Used to Hold Hands

words and music by Rick Paul

Love Holds On cover art
From the album Love Holds On

We were just two kids in the bleachers
At a high school football game
Neither of us knew the score
That wasn’t why we came
Our eyes were never on the field
But we were there each Saturday
Snuggling against each other in the top row of the stands
Back when we used to hold hands

We were just two kids off at college
A hundred miles apart
Letters from you came each day
On each you drew a heart
But then one day I got a note
That said you’d found someone new
Memories were all it left us of those days up in the stands
Back when we used to hold hands

Now we watch the kids from the bleachers
At a pee wee football game
Friends are all we are today
Still I’m so glad you came
Though our eyes are often on the field
We’ve got so much to talk about
Spouses and those little ones that we can’t live without
But somehow I can’t help thinking ’bout those days up in the stands
Back when we used to hold hands

No, I just can’t help but thinking ’bout our days up in the stands
Back when we used to hold hands
Back when we used to hold hands
